Meningitis is a devastating disease with a high case fatality rate and leading to serious long-term complications. Meningitis remains a major global public-health challenge. Epidemics of meningitis are seen across the world.

Many organisms can cause meningitis including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. Bacterial meningitis is of particular concern. Around 1 in 10 people who get this type of meningitis die and 1 in 5 have severe complications¹ Distinguishing viral from bacterial meningitis based on clinical presentation is challenging. Patients often present with similar symptoms and bacterial meningitis can be fatal in 24 to 48 hours².

Streptococcus agalactiae or Group B Streptococcus (GBS) has long been a leading cause of neonatal infection, including sepsis, pneumonia, and meningitis. To prevent GBS neonatal infections, the ASM 2021 Guidelines for the Detection and Identification of Group B Streptococcus³ recommends a universal screening at the 36/37 weeks of pregnancy.
