Encephalitis Facts
- Encephalitis is an inflammation of the brain that can affect anyone, regardless health or age.
- Encephalitis has a variety of causes, the most common being a viral infection that invades the brain. Herpesviruses, enteroviruses, West Nile virus, and tick-borne viruses are often identified in infectious encephalitis cases. Autoimmune encephalitis can also occur when the immune system attacks the brain in error1
- A report from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) estimated an encephalitis incidence of 29/100 0007; with a world population of 7.8 billion, this is equal to 2,262,000 cases of encephalitis per year2
- Encephalitis leads to death in about 10% of patients, and survivors of severe cases may be left with life-changing consequences, such as concentration problems, hearing loss, memory loss, or blindness.1
