About the Speaker:
Professor Mark H. Wilcox, MD, is a Consultant / Head of Microbiology Research & Development / and Infection Lead of the Leeds NIHR MIC at Leeds Teaching Hospitals; Professor of Medical Microbiology, at the University of Leeds; Lead on C. difficile infection (CDI) for Public Health England (PHE); & Medical Advisor to the National Infection Prevention & Control Lead at NHS Improvement (national target to reduce Gram-negative blood stream infections). He has formerly been the Director of Infection Prevention (4 years), Infection Control Doctor (8 years), Clinical Director of Pathology (6 years) at LTHT and Head of Microbiology (15 years). He has authored over 470 papers and published a number of books and chapters. He is a member of the UK, European, and US (IDSA) working groups on CDI.
Overview:
A discussion of the challenges of achieving an accurate diagnosis of C. difficile infection (CDI) and the consequences of misdiagnoses. How guidelines in Europe and, most recently, in the US are meeting the challenge of CDI diagnosis.
At the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Identify the various currently available C. difficile diagnostics technologies.
- Evaulate how and when to use the currently available C. difficile diagnostics technologies.
- Explain the 2017 IDSA/SHEA recommendations on C. difficile diagnosis.
- Discuss the possibility of overdiagnosis for CDI.
